Biography

Prof. Omar Mohammed Aly, Ph.D.
Vice Dean for Graduate Studies and Research
Professor of Medicinal Chemistry, Faculty of Pharmacy, Port Said University, Egypt

Born on August 8, 1967, Prof. Omar Mohammed Aly is an accomplished Egyptian scientist and academic specializing in medicinal and pharmaceutical chemistry. He currently serves as Vice Dean for Graduate Studies and Research and Professor of Medicinal Chemistry at the Faculty of Pharmacy, Port Said University.

Prof. Aly earned his B.Sc. in Pharmaceutical Sciences from Zagazig University in 1990, followed by an M.Sc. in Medicinal Chemistry (1999) and a Ph.D. in Medicinal Chemistry from Minia University (2003).

I further advanced my expertise through a postdoctoral fellowship at the University of Georgia, USA (2006–2007), where I focused on the design and synthesis of nucleoside analogs with potential anti-HBV activity.

Throughout my career, I have held key academic and administrative roles, including Head of the Department of Medicinal and Organic Chemistry at Minia University (2009–2015) and Head of the Pharmaceutical Chemistry Department at Albaha University, Saudi Arabia (2017–2019), where I also served as College Coordinator. I have extensive teaching experience in medicinal and organic chemistry across Egypt and Saudi Arabia, contributing significantly to undergraduate and postgraduate education.

My research spans anticancer drug discovery, antiviral agents, natural products, molecular docking, and drug design, with more than 60 international publications in high-impact journals. I have supervised numerous graduate students, guiding over 19 master’s theses and 5 Ph.D. dissertations.

I have  been recognized with several prestigious awards and grants, including the Prof. Ehab Hassan Esmail Award for Excellence in Ph.D. Research (2005), multiple research grants from Egypt and Saudi Arabia, and Minia University Awards for International Publications. I have also been listed in Marquis Who’s Who in the World.

In addition to my research contributions, Prof. Aly is highly active in scientific publishing and peer review. He serves on the editorial boards of leading journals, including European Journal of Medicinal Chemistry, Talanta, and Molecules. I am also Editor-in-Chief of the journal Octahedron Drug Research and have acted as Guest Editor for Current Topics in Medicinal Chemistry.

I have presented my work at numerous international conferences in Egypt, the USA, and the Gulf region, and has hosted scientific webinars, such as on Advanced Mass Spectrometry (2025).

I am a member of several professional associations, including the American Chemical Society, the Egyptian Pharmacists’ Syndicate, and the Egyptian Pharmaceutical Sciences Society.

My career reflects a strong commitment to advancing medicinal chemistry research, fostering international collaborations, and mentoring the next generation of pharmaceutical scientists.
